my "new" filofax amethyst slimline deco

The Deco is a model which has always seduced me but the big clasp was a worry. What if it broke? What if it was damaged or scratched? These worries were enough for me to hold off on purchasing one. But, when this Slimline Deco popped up on eBay and with the price staying low enough to tempt me, I took the plunge with ten seconds to go and was shocked to win it with a bid within my pre-determined budget. (I always bid on eBay with a maximum in mind and I never go over this!)

Anyway, my reason for this purchase? Well, last week, I was in London and found that my Osterley was extraordinarily heavy! I had to slim its inserts down and got it down to 10mm in height, but having so little in such big, 23mm, rings didn't look or feel right. This is when I knew I had to go down to a Compact or a Slimline. I always thought a Slimline would be too small; but an, apparently, new and unused Deco for this price? Worth an experiment!

So here it is:

Upon opening it... There is a pen loop to the left and look at the suede! Filofaxgasm. Srsly.

And the back - there is a slip pocket.

And how it looks from the top (with the inserts that it came with):

And a closer look at the rings - look how little they seem! I love this.

I find this Deco fitting for my Minimalism challenge. It will most likely be my portable Filofax and my Osterley will be the one that stays on my desk. I'm going to try two diaries (simultaneously) for 2013 I think; one in the Deco and one in the Osterley, and see how that works. I'm going to plan the set up of the Deco soon and hopefully, there will be a post on that if the set-up works.

What do you guys think? Do you think 11mm is too restricting? Do you think this will work for me (feel free to say no!)? Will I need to upgrade to 15mm? Stay tuned ;D

P.S. Because of this purchase, I have realised that I have no definitive need for some organisers. Could one of my barely used/new organisers suit you?

  1. I sooooo intended on bidding for this but totally forgot! I was gutted when I realised. It's really beautiful. I use a slimline Adelphi but their rings are 13mm rather than 11mm. Very jealous! If you decide to sell, please contact me! Lucy x

    1. How does the Adelphi work for you? Does the lack of clasp annoy you at all? I've moved into my Deco now but am worried that the lack of a clasp may be a problem? x

    2. I was nervous at first and thought I wouldn't get along with it but to be honest, it doesn't bother me at all. It's never opened and creased my pages in my bag, it's absolutely fine!

    3. That's good! Sounds promising then cos I was also worried about creased pages x

  4. Gah, seeing all the compact/slimline posts throughout many blogs has made me want to get one too! :( I'm tempted to buy the new Alice Temperly Ikat compact, it looks lovely and the inserts look gorgeous! x

    1. Less is more ;) If the new Temperley range is anything like the first one, the only inserts that are 'special' are the first page, the 2012/2013/2014 overview page, plus all those Temperley specific inserts. The diary inserts were just normal cotton cream ones :) That's not to say it's not worth it, I loved these other inserts x

  5. I've got a rather homely brown Finsbury slimline. I really like slimlines, wish I could fit into one, but that seems incredibly unlikely considering how much crap I like to keep in the filo. I use the slimline when I'm out in a suit and not carrying a bag. The slimline (just barely) slips into the breast pocket in my suit jacket. I take some essentials out of the Cavendish (usually the monthly diary, today's 2PPD, contacts, and a sheet or two of notepaper) and pop them into the slimline. Works quite well, but the Finsbury is just so ugly. I'd love to find a nice looking one, like your Deco, in a bit more masculine style. Probably the Cuban is closest to what I'd like to have. Should keep my eye out for one. Since 11mm ringed versions are only barely fit-able in my jacket pockets, I definitely need to stay away from any 13mm versions (i.e. Holborn). Your Deco is LOVELY.

    1. How on earth do you lug around your Cavendish? I read some tweets where you listed what you had in it - seems like you carry everything but the kitchen sink! I don't particularly like the Finsbury design either, which is why I gifted it to my sister. She seems to find it ok looking though.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you and a slimline Cuban x

  6. I cant wait to see how you fit in to it and find it!!!

This will be such an experiment for you!!!

I know that I couldn't go any smaller than 15mm rings, I think in an ideal world I need 18mm!! xx

    1. This is definitely an experience :) I've slimmed into a Compact before but a Slimline is a whole new kettle of fish. Excited for it though, especially if it means that my bag will be lighter now.

You should tell Filofax that there would be a market for custom ring sizes! Or at least make them do proper market research and ask what size rings people would like to see more of! x

    2. I feel like I've seen Winchesters on ebay listed as having 19mm rings? Perhaps a good compromise?

  8. LOVE IT! I am currently using a slimeline and yeah, need to be REALLY minimalist for it!
Weirdly it requires a lot of maintenance as I need to constantly be swapping full written pages to blank new ones.
Will see how long I will last :D

    1. Yes! I've only been using it for the past few days but I already have this problem. However, I love the small rings (they are SO cute) and make writing so much easier. Plus, I quite like having less in there. When I was moving into it, I realised that a lot of the things I carried could quite easily be left at home. Don't know how this will change when I become employed though (currently unemployable due to 'illness') x

  9. It's beautiful & I was the other bidder!
I just assumed it would go way above what I would want to pay & wasn't in at the end of the auction, so well done on your lovely bargain :)

    1. Ah, I did wonder who it was! Had a feeling it would be a fellow Philofaxer ;) (Happily) Surprised there were no other bids that evening though, especially with 'Deco' in the title x

    2. Guess what... just managed to get one of these in the ruby colour! Decided I would only bid an extra £1 & got it :) Have never seen either amethyst or ruby colours in the flesh, so don't know which one I prefer x

    3. I noticed that one on eBay too ;) the pictures the seller took aren't really that representative of the colour in real life I've found so make sure you do a post on it or something when it arrives :) x
