my week #178

This week has been a weird one and my definite highlight was seeing my friends on Friday night. Thursday and Friday was spent at a neurological rehabilitation unit and it definitely helped put things into perspective as well as improve my knowledge of what can be offered for those who have suffered a stroke or suffer from a chronic, debilitating condition.

On Monday, I start five weeks of psychiatry and I'm unsure of what to expect though I'm certain that it'll be an interesting placement nonetheless.

My planner looks quite bare this week even though I've had quite a busy and full week.

How has your week been?

  1. Psychiatry is cool but can be pretty confronting.

  2. I went to a psychiatric institution in my city as part of my psychology course, and it was really interesting, but really moving too. I have to admit it was hard and really moving, I had to contain myself really hard because I almost cried with some patient's story, but the work the psychologists and psychiatrists did was amazing. I hope you like it!!

    1. Totally - having spoken to a few psychiatric patients now, it hit home just how close many of us are to crossing that line. And how past experiences and how we deal with them can affect our future behaviour. Not enjoying the placement much if I'm honest but not quite halfway yet so still time for that to change! x

  3. Yay psych! I'm biased because I'm an RMN, but you'll love it!

    1. Hehe I'm not really enjoying it if I'm honest! Still got three weeks to go so I'll reserve proper judgement until then! x

  5. Hey! When I did my 9 week rotation in psychiatry earlier this year, I was initially apprehensive, and honestly, scared. But the main thing to keep in mind is that they truly believe in what delusions they hold dear, and that we must maintain a non-judgemental attitude, regardless of how farfetched some stories are. I think, if you like listening to people's problems in general, psychiatry would be good to you.

    1. I wasn't apprehensive as such - more that I don't find psychiatry that interesting! Talking to patients is interesting but I've always found that talking to patients (whatever the setting or specialty) interesting. I think it's more the fact that it's one of those specialties I know isn't for me (I guess all medical students will have a few in that category). x
