what do you do with old cards?

Firstly, H A P P Y   N E W   Y E A R ! I hope 2013 is the year where all your hopes and dreams become reality. And, I wish you all good health, good fortune and happiness for the year ahead.

Every Christmas and every birthday we experience, we receive cards. Sometimes, we receive a super cute or a really beautiful card that seems a bit of a waste to just toss into the recycling bin. So, the question is, what do you do with them?

I know some of you turn them into dividers for your planner but the cards I have are of a odd shape. Are there any other possibilities for cute cards? I used to stick them in my planner but it just feels like a shame to hide away cards that are as cute as this:

This card was from my sister, who sent it to me before my operation in an effort to cheer me up :) so it holds some sentimental value too. I also have a birthday card from her which is really cute too but it is too big to be made into a divider really.

At the moment, I have it stuck on my wall (along with other pictures of memories from my time at university, pictures of my childhood and school days, etc) but it seems to cute to just keep it on my wall. It is just the right width to make into a divider but chopping it up seems wrong too as the message inside is quite cute! All in all, I'm stuck for ideas.

What do you do with your old Christmas and birthday cards?

  1. I actually hoard all my birthday cards :) Some of them are too cute to cut up! I've also received a few hand made cards from a bunch of friends so I can't bear to cut them ):

  2. I gotta say that I'm always really bad about mine...They go in the bin! It's a pity really, but with our teeny weeny apartment any potential clutter has to go!

    1. I guess that's fair enough :) I've hoarded all of my birthday cards since my 13th birthday (crazy, I know) and also Christmas cards since my first year at uni, and now that I'm moving (to a smaller) house, I want to find something to do with them x

  3. I actually tweeted a pic of my recycled cards this morning. Going to reuse them as gift tags for next Christmas :) xx

    1. Just had a look! That's such a good idea! I never put gift tags on the presents I give though :( Might have to start! Thanks for the idea :D x

  4. I'm just as bad with saving old cards, so I've made myself promise to do something with them! I looked around, and I found some really cute methods of using yarn or string to bind cards into a sort of book- I'm super excited to try this with all the cards I saved from our wedding as soon as I find time! That way we can keep it out somewhere in our house, and always flip through it. I suppose you could do the same thing with a little book for Christmas and birthdays- plus, you could always add to it.

Hopefully it works out- I'll let you know!

    1. Oh I can imagine that the cards from your wedding are beautiful! And it would be like a mini scrapbook of memories - love this idea, will have to remember if I ever get married hehe x

  5. Wow, people throw their cards away? Kind of heartbreaking, really! I keep all personal correspondence. That said, I've noticed a lot of people are sending out printed holiday cards with no personalization whatsoever, and I would have no qualms about either recycling these into bookmarks or dividers or even just binning them. I do need to come up with some sort of filing system for cards and letters; they are getting a bit out of control and I can't put my hands on any individual piece without going through the whole pile.

    1. Bookmarks and dividers are brilliant ideas!!! Definitely going to see if any of the cards I have are the ideal shape for this. I have received some beautiful Christmas cards these last few years so I can imagine there being a whole range of Christmas-themed dividers that I could break out once a year :)

I can just imagine, in ten years time, you'd have some sort of sophisticated file/folder with all cards and letters and looking back on it would be amazing. It's hard to do this, though, without increasing the amount of clutter (something I'm trying to combat on a continual basis :( ) x
